Pilates and Tai Chi:
For fitness, rehabilitation and injury prevention
Pilates
Pilates is an exercise technique that focuses on core postural muscles. These muscles keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine. Pilates can improve overall muscle function which can help alleviate pain, prevent injury, enhance conditioning, and maximize sports performance. Participants become acutely aware of how the body feels, where it is in space, and how to optimally control its movement.
Spinal Dynamics offers a unique advantage over many area Pilates providers – our certified instructor is also a physical therapist. And, we offer both mat- and reformer-based Pilates, in one-on-one or group sessions. For the majority of patients, we use the “spinal-neutral” position, because we feel the best position for joint protection.
Benefits of Pilates
- Develop a strong "core" (spinal, abdominal and diaphragm muscles)
- Rehabilitate injuries with low-impact, partial weight-bearing exercises
- Build strength without "bulking up"
- Prevent injury
- Reduce stress
- Learn efficient patterns of motion
- Create an evenly conditioned body and be challenged
Our instructor is also a Schroth-certified therapist. We have found Pilates is an excellent adjunt to Schroth therapy for adults with scoliosis, especially those with degenerative changes and instability.

Tai Chi
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that uses a series of slow, graceful movements. It has been described as a moving meditation and can be performed by people across a wide range of ages and physical abilities. Our class bridges Eastern mind/body principles with Western medical model analysis.
Research supports mulitple health benefits for those who practice Tai Chi including:
- low to moderate cardiovascular exercise
- improved balance
- improved lower extremity strength
- decreased bood pressure and lower stress hormone levels
- decreased anxiety and depression
- bone density retention
We offer one-hour classes, most often on Saturdays at 9 am, to teach basic movements from the Yang School of Tai Chi. Participants can learn and practice individual patterns of functional movements. Small class sizes allow for individualized feedback. Our certified instructor is also a physical therapist, bringing a background to ensure safe, biomechanically correct execution of Tai Chi movement patterns. We also pay individualized attention to your health and injury history, and your personal goals - helping you make the most of your experience.
