Dr. Chen welcomes new patients to her practice.  Additionally, staff at Spinal Dynamics are pleased to collaborate with Dr. Chen in suggesting acupuncture as a treatment for some of our physical therapy patients.  In our practice, we often see people who’ve struggled with chronic pain issues or physical limitations for long periods of time.  Especially for these patients, we are readily willing to explore and recommend approaches to optimize care.  For some, we may suggest combining physical therapy with acupuncture.

About Acupuncture
According to classical Chinese explanation, channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These channels, called meridians, are like rivers that irrigate and nourish tissues in the body.  An obstruction in movement of these rivers is like a backed-up river dam.  Meridians can be influenced by inserting acupuncture needles into specific points.  Needles unblock obstructions and reestablish energy flow. Acupuncture can help the body's internal organs correct imbalances in digestion, absorption, and energy production.  It can aid in circulation of energy from the body’s organs through the meridians.

According to modern science, needling acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain.  These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system.

Acupuncture stimulates the body's natural healing abilities, and promotes physical and emotional well-being.  You can experience improved energy and biochemical balance.

About Our Specialist
Dr. Chen understands conditions from the perspectives of both primary care medicine and Oriental medicine.  She brings you a unique capability to explain acupuncture and other alternative medicine techniques.  She can effectively communicate with your primary care and specialty physicians about your care.

In 1983, Dr. Chen earned a medical degree (Dipl. of Med.) from Shandong Medical University, China.  After four years as a staff physician at China’s Tianjin Municipal Center for Preventive Medicine and three years of medical practice in Berlin, Germany, Dr. Chen moved to the US, earned permanent certification from the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, and continued training at the Medical College of Wisconsin, including pre-residency and internship training at several Milwaukee-area health care organizations.

Through continued studies, Dr. Chen discovered a passion for alternative medicine and, a specific interest in acupuncture.  In 2008, she graduated from the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine and earned the title “Diplomate of Acupuncture” from the National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

What Can You Expect During Acupuncture Treatment?
During your appointment, Dr. Chen inserts hair-like needles, or filaments, into the soft tissues under the skin at specific acupuncture points and meridians.  You will feel no pain, or feel minimal discomfort, when needles are inserted.  For some patients, Dr. Chen combines needling with other modalities, such as cupping, Tui-Na, or electro-stimulation.  For some patients, Dr. Chen does electro-stimulation mapping over the needles, which has yielded excellent results for many.
