Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (BSPTS)

Certification Course 1 (C1) –

The 3-D Treatment of Scoliosis according to the Principles of Schroth

Physical therapists can now become Schroth certified in the United States through Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (BSPTS) – founded by Dr. Manuel Rigo in 2009.

Visit Scoliosis Education Seminars to find out how to become Schroth certified.

BSPTS History
The BSPTS program teaches 3-D scoliosis treatment according to the principles of Katerina and Christa Lehnert Schroth that began in Germany in the 1920’s.  Dr. Rigo was trained at the original Katerina Schroth Clinic in Germany in the 1980’s. Since then, he and his staff have practiced Schroth principles at his clinic, Institut Elena Salva, in Barcelona, Spain. In 1989, Dr. Rigo received approval to begin teaching Schroth certification courses for physical therapists. After a decade of teaching, he founded BSPTS to further develop scoliosis curriculum — teaching the original Schroth principles and adding advanced concepts learned during years of clinical experience and research.

BSPTS Instructors
The first International Body of Instructors for BSPTS was formed in 2011 with a goal of making courses more available around the world.  Instructors currently include experienced physical therapists from Spain, Israel and the United States, who are offering certification courses in their respective countries.  In addition to certification courses for patient care, the school has developed a process for physical therapists to become BSPTS Certified Instructors.  This will allow continued growth in course offerings and ongoing improvements in conservative management standards for scoliosis.

BSPTS Courses
Course curriculum includes Schroth principles of 3-D exercises for sensory-motor and kinesthetic development. Goals of treatment are to facilitate corrections of the altered posture and teach the patient to maintain corrections in daily living in order to minimize progression of spinal deformity.

Courses provide in-depth explanation of anatomy, etiology, clinical examination, and treatment of scoliosis. Participants will learn to recognize, evaluate, and treat different scoliosis curve patterns. Bracing concepts will be covered.  DIERS formetric assessment will be demonstrated. Course format includes lectures, labs for evaluation and exercise, and live patient demonstration. On the final day participants will take a certification exam.

Courses for certification are open only to physical therapists.
